AI ‘Boys’ Club’ Could Widen Wealth Gap for Women, Says Rana el Kaliouby

AI researcher Rana el Kaliouby warns that lack of women in AI could lead to economic disadvantages and wider gender wealth gaps in tech.

San Francisco: AI scientist Rana el Kaliouby says the tech world’s “boys’ club” problem could hurt women’s money future. She spoke at a tech meeting in Texas.

El Kaliouby runs an investing company where she looks for women leaders. Three out of four companies she helps have women bosses. She says women aren’t getting money or chances they need.

“If women are left out,” she says, “we will look back in five or ten years and see a bigger money gap between men and women.” She worries this could happen because women aren’t starting companies or getting money to grow them.

These changes also affect what tech products are made. Some AI companies feel pressure to make their computer programs match certain ideas. El Kaliouby thinks this could lead to bad results.

“I feel like this is a very important time,” she adds. “We need to speak up about things we care about like fairness and different ideas if we want things to turn out well.”
