San Francisco: My Apple Watch is smart but doesn’t always match my clothes. I’ve left it at home for dressy events because the bands didn’t fit the outfit. Sometimes I let bright orange sport bands clash with my clothes by mistake.

Apple Watch bands are an easy and not-too-expensive way to change how your watch looks. Different bands can also help your watch work better. I wouldn’t wear a heavy metal band when I’m exercising because it would weigh me down. I also wouldn’t wear a thin silicone band to a fancy dinner.

We at WIRED have been testing Apple Watch bands since 2015. I’ve picked the best ones for different times and places. You might also want to read our guides about the best Apple Watch extras and other smart watches.

The Nike Sport Loop has been my regular band since 2020. I bought another one in 2023 because I wanted a color change. The band is made from recycled plastic, stretchy material, and nylon. It’s light and lets air flow through. It has special loops that keep sweat away from your skin. If you wash it by hand it stays clean and doesn’t smell.

You can adjust the band with one hand using Velcro. The hook-and-loop fastener might catch on soft clothes but it works well. While it’s made for sports you can wear it almost anywhere. I wouldn’t wear it to something very fancy but it’s great for work or hanging out with friends.

The Nomad Stratos Band was first made for the Apple Watch Ultra but fits other models too. It’s easy to make fit and looks nice enough for the office. The metal parts are strong and don’t get scratched easily. The rubber links bend well and can get wet without damage. Strong magnets make it easy to put on and a button keeps it from falling off by accident. It’s heavy which makes it better for everyday wear than for fancy events.
