New York: If I were getting a camera, I would choose the A7C R, travel or not. This camera is one of the smallest full-frame, interchangeable-lens cameras available. That’s why it’s our top pick in the Best Mirrorless Cameras guide. It has a 61-MP sensor that captures amazing details. Its dynamic range is very good at 14.7 EV. The autofocus system is super fast, making it great for taking pictures of fast-moving scenes while traveling.

Although Sony’s R series is mostly for high-resolution images, the video features are good for casual users. It supports 4K/60 fps video in full-frame mode or 4K/30 fps video. Both settings support 10-bit 4:2 color depth, different Log formats, and even 16-bit RAW output for an external recorder.

My main issue with the A7C R is still the same as before. The viewfinder is small and has low resolution, at 2.36 million dots. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it’s a point to consider, and you might want to rent it first before buying.

The big question is which lens to use for travel. The Sony FE 24-105-mm f/4 G ($1,398) is a strong choice. It can do everything from wide shots to portraits, with some extra zoom. If you prefer prime lenses, the Sony 40-mm f2.5 G ($798) is a compact option. I find that 40-mm is a surprisingly great choice for travel.

If you’re looking for a less expensive option, consider the Sony A7C II at $2,198. It has a smaller 33-MP sensor but is similar in size and functions. It also has better video features than the A7C R, making it a better choice for those who want to take videos and photos.
