Chicago: Caterpillar is working with Nvidia to add AI to its construction machines. They are testing a new system called “Cat AI” in the Cat 306 CR Mini Excavator. This system helps operators by providing answers to questions, safety tips, and scheduling services.

Brandon Hootman, an official at Caterpillar, said this system collects important data while operators work. “Our customers spend time in the dirt, not in front of a computer,” he explained. The ability to get insights while working is very important.

Caterpillar is also trying out digital simulations of construction sites using Nvidia’s tools. This helps in planning and deciding how much material is needed for building projects. Hootman shared that their machines send about 2,000 messages back to the company every second to assist in creating these simulations.

The company has already created self-driving vehicles for mining. Hootman believes these new systems are a solid step toward more automation. Working with Nvidia helps fit into their plans as they explore AI further.

Nvidia aims to lead in physical AI, which includes robotics and other fields. Bill Dally, Nvidia’s chief scientist, stated that their new technologies are designed for building and testing AI models. Deepu Talla, another Nvidia executive, mentioned that physical AI is important for everyone working with robotics today, including machines made by Caterpillar.
