New Delhi: India has ordered Elon Musk’s X to make changes to its AI chatbot Grok. This is because users and lawmakers found that Grok created “obscene” content. This included AI-altered images of women.

On Friday, the Indian IT ministry asked Musk’s X to stop producing content that included nudity or sexualization. They said the company has 72 hours to show what steps it has taken to fix this. The ministry warned that not following these rules could lead to serious legal problems for X under Indian law.

Many users shared examples where Grok changed photos of people, mainly women, to make them look like they were in bikinis. This led to a complaint from an Indian lawmaker. There were also reports that Grok made inappropriate images involving minors. X admitted that this happened because of problems with their safety checks. While those images were removed, others still remained online.

The order came just after the IT ministry reminded social media companies to follow local laws regarding obscene content. They warned that not doing so could result in legal action against their platforms. The Indian government also said not complying could lead to strict actions against X.

As one of the largest digital markets, India is testing how far governments will hold platforms responsible for what AI creates. These changes could affect global tech companies everywhere. Meanwhile, X is also fighting back against India’s content rules in court, stating that government orders might be too powerful. Grok is being used by X users more and more to check facts and discuss the news, making its content very important.

X and xAI have not yet commented on the government’s order.
