Indonesia blocks Grok over non-consensual, sexualized deepfakes

Jakarta: Indonesia is blocking access to Grok, an AI chatbot. This action is because of serious problems with sexualized, AI-made images. These images often show real women and minors, and can sometimes be harmful. Officials are reacting strongly by stopping Grok due to these serious issues.

The communications minister, Meutya Hafid, said that using non-consensual sexual deepfakes is a big violation of human rights. She wants to keep citizens safe online. The ministry is also talking to X officials about these problems.

Other countries like India and those in Europe are also concerned. India told xAI to stop Grok from making bad content. The European Commission is checking to see if they need to investigate. In the UK, Ofcom is looking into this matter too, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer supports their actions.

In America, opinions vary. Some Democratic senators want Apple and Google to take X off their app stores. Meanwhile, xAI’s leadership has apologized. They said Grok made posts that might break U.S. laws, and they put limits on some features for paying users. However, this didn’t stop all image generation on Grok, which remains open to all.

After users questioned the lack of action against other AI tools, Elon Musk suggested that governments want reasons to censor.
