Is Craigslist the Last Real Place on the Internet?

Los Angeles: Megan Koester got her start in writing from a Craigslist ad. She found a job reviewing internet videos. Later, she found her rent-controlled apartment and even land in the Mojave Desert where she built a home. She furnished it with free items from Craigslist, like laminate flooring from a production company.

“There’s so many elements of my life that are suffused with Craigslist,” says Koester, who shares “harrowing images” from the site on her Instagram. She feels strongly about her love for Craigslist. Many users believe it’s an important part of their lives. It’s a place where people can be anonymous, find items without cash, and make real connections. People even use it to cast for TV shows like The Rehearsal and Jury Duty. Unlike sites like TikTok and Instagram, Craigslist doesn’t track users or use algorithms. This makes it feel more honest and less focused on popularity.

Koester believes, “The real freaks come out on Craigslist,” and she sees honesty in its simplicity. While the site is a bit safer than before, it still thrives. Some sections like “missed connections” are still active. Jessa Lingel, a professor, calls it the “ungentrified” internet, while many sites now use AI.

Some may say Craigslist is outdated, but its loyal fans disagree. Kat Toledo, an actor who uses the site for her stand-up show, says, “I think Craigslist is having a revival.” She started using it in the 2000s for romance, housing, and her job as an assistant. Despite its past reputation for scams, she sees real value in its simple, community-driven approach.
