Lego’s Smart Brick Transforms Classic Toy with Innovative Digital Features
Lego’s new Smart Play platform lets kids enjoy interactive play without screens, blending classic bricks with modern tech.
The Smart Play uses a special brick that connects to Smart Minifigures and Smart Tags. This brick is just like a regular 2×4 Lego brick but has special technology inside. When kids use it, they can hear sounds and see lights that match their play.
For instance, on March 1, Lego will release the Star Wars Smart Play Luke’s Red Five X-Wing set. This set costs $100 and comes with two Smart Minifigs: Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. It also includes five Smart Tags that make cool sounds like lasers and engine noises. The Smart Brick acts as the brain for these sounds and lights.
Two more Star Wars Smart Play sets will come out on the same day. The first set is Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter for $70 and the other is the Throne Room Duel for $160. The Throne Room Duel is special because it has three Minifigures: Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Luke Skywalker. Together, kids can reenact or create their own lightsaber battles from Star Wars. They can even listen to “The Imperial March” while they play.
Lego says that the Smart Play platform has over 20 new technologies that are patented, meaning other companies can’t use them. The Smart Brick has a tiny chip inside, which is smaller than a regular Lego stud. It also includes things like lights, sensors, and a small speaker.
The battery is designed to last even if it’s not used for years. Lego made sure to include wireless charging too, so kids can easily power up their Smart Bricks without any cords.
