Microsoft’s Nadella wants us to stop thinking of AI as ‘slop’

Nadella Encourages a Shift in How We View AI Beyond the ‘Slop’ Mentality

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella wants to redefine AI, encouraging people to see it as a tool for enhancing human potential.

San Francisco: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared thoughts on AI. He wants us to stop calling AI “slop” and see it as “bicycles for the mind.” He wrote in his blog that AI should help us grow our human potential not replace us.

Nadella believes we must change how we think about AI. We need to see it as a tool that helps people, instead of just a way to do jobs. He pointed out that many companies say they are using AI to replace workers, which can make people worried about losing jobs.

But here’s the good news! Nadella says that most AI tools don’t replace jobs; they assist people. Many jobs still need humans to check AI work. For example, MIT’s Project Iceberg says AI can do about 12% of what humans do. But this means AI helps with parts of jobs, like writing code or paperwork.

Some jobs, like graphic designers and new coders, are affected by AI. Yet skilled workers using AI do better than those who don’t use it. A recent report shows that jobs impacted by AI are actually growing. Vanguard’s report says that people who master AI tools make themselves more valuable.

Nadella’s own company, Microsoft, laid off over 15,000 workers last year, even while making big profits. This added to fears about AI. However, the truth is a bit more complicated. The layoffs mostly happened because Microsoft was shifting toward growing business areas, not just due to AI.

In 2025, many tech companies laid off thousands, partly because they wanted to invest in AI. So while some of us enjoy the funny side of AI, there’s more to it than just “slop.”
