Netflix Plans Major App Redesign to Compete With Social Media for Users
Netflix is rethinking its app to include social features and improve user engagement against platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
Co-CEO Greg Peters said the new app will help Netflix grow over the next ten years. This redesign will help them test and improve their service over time. The focus will be on showing short video clips in a way that is similar to Instagram Reels and TikTok. Users will be able to see fun clips from Netflix shows.
Peters also said Netflix plans to add video podcasts too. This is new for them, as YouTube has been a leader in this area. Netflix has begun some original video podcasts hosted by famous people like Pete Davidson. They also have tied up with companies like Spotify for more content.
These efforts are meant to make using Netflix feel more like other social media. CTO Elizabeth Stone mentioned that Netflix is not trying to copy TikTok; they are creating a unique experience for discovering entertainment.
During the same call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos talked about the new competition in streaming. He said all types of media are competing for viewers’ attention now. It’s not just about TV shows anymore; even big events like the Oscars are on YouTube.
Sarandos also mentioned Netflix’s new ideas for movie releases. They are looking to combine streaming and theater, especially after plans to acquire Warner Bros.
In 2025, Netflix made $45.2 billion in revenue, and their ad revenue reached more than $1.5 billion. They also hit a record of 325 million paid subscriptions by the end of 2025.
