Pentagon moves to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk

The Pentagon is threatening to label AI company Anthropic a security risk after Trump banned its use in federal agencies.

New York: President Trump told federal agencies to stop using AI company Anthropic’s products. He gave them six months to stop using the products. The president said the government does not want to work with them again.

But then the Pentagon made things worse. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called Anthropic a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.” This means no military partners can work with Anthropic at all.

Anthropic did not want their AI used for watching people at home or for weapons that work alone. The company’s leader, Dario Amodei, said they would go to court if the government tries to call them a risk.

The fight started because the Pentagon wanted to use Anthropic’s AI but with fewer rules. Anthropic said no because they worry about how the AI might be used.

OpenAI, another big AI company, came to help Anthropic. OpenAI’s leader, Sam Altman, said they have the same worries about AI being used to watch people at home or for weapons.

By the way, OpenAI made a new deal with the Pentagon that gives the same protections Anthropic wanted. This happened just hours after Trump said to stop using Anthropic’s products.

See, the government gave contracts to three big AI companies last year: Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Some Google workers support what Anthropic is doing, but Google has not said anything yet.

There will probably be more changes to this story soon.
