Roblox Faces Backlash Over Flawed AI-Powered Age Verification System
Roblox’s new AI age verification tool is causing major issues, frustrating players and raising privacy concerns.
New York: Roblox’s AI-powered age verification system is a complete mess. Just days after it launched, players are already upset because they cannot chat with their friends. This system uses face scanning to guess users’ ages before they can talk on the platform.
The tool was created to help keep younger users safe by allowing them to chat only with those their age. However, many players feel frustrated. Experts say the AI is making mistakes and incorrectly aging players. Some young users are mistakenly labeled as adults, and it does not help stop dangerous users who might prey on kids.
WIRED found cases where people were selling age-verified accounts for minors as young as 9 years old on eBay for just $4. After being informed, eBay said they would take action against these listings.
Roblox’s chief safety officer Matt Kaufman explained that a big change like this takes time. He said it’s not realistic to expect everything to work perfectly right away, especially with so many daily users. He also mentioned that millions have already verified their ages, showing that many want a safer environment.
Roblox knows some issues exist, like parents checking ages for their young kids, which can lead to kids being wrongly aged to 21+. The company announced this verification plan last July to make the platform safer after being pressured by lawsuits about protecting young users.
The lawsuits from attorneys general in Louisiana, Texas, and Kentucky claim Roblox did not protect kids from potential predators. Roblox hopes this age check will stop unknown adults from interacting with children. However, if users don’t verify their ages, they lose access to chat, which is why many use Roblox.
To verify, users take a short video or upload a government ID if they’re over 13. Roblox says it deletes all personal info right away, but many are worried about privacy. Verified users can only chat with players close to their age. For instance, those under 9 can chat with players up to 13, while those 16 can chat with players between ages 13 and 20.
