Snap Reaches Settlement in Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Just Before Trial
Snap has settled a lawsuit claiming its platform causes social media addiction and mental health issues days before trial proceedings were set to begin.
The lawsuit was brought by a 19-year-old known as K.G.M. They accused Snap of creating features that lead to addiction and mental health problems. The exact details of the settlement were not shared.
Snap is not alone in this situation. Other companies like Meta, YouTube, and TikTok have also been named in the lawsuit, but no deals have been made with them yet. Snap still faces other lawsuits about social media addiction.
Documents from these ongoing cases show that Snap workers had voiced concerns about teens’ mental health for at least nine years. Snap claimed these examples were picked out unfairly and taken out of context.
The lawsuit argues that social media platforms trick users into using their apps too much. Features like infinite scrolling and auto video play can lead to serious problems like depression and eating disorders.
Snap’s CEO, Evan Spiegel, was supposed to testify in court. This case is special because it would have been the first time a social media company faced a jury in an addiction lawsuit. So far, no company has lost such a case in a trial.
While the trial for Snap is settled, the cases against Meta, TikTok, and YouTube will still move forward with jury selection scheduled next week. If the plaintiffs win, experts think it could lead to huge settlements and change how the platforms operate. However, these companies defend their designs as similar to how newspapers choose their stories, saying it falls under free speech.
Snap has not commented on the situation yet.
