The Fight on Capitol Hill to Make It Easier to Fix Your Car

The Fight on Capitol Hill to Make Car Repairs Easier for Everyone

Car owners seek access to vehicle data as lawmakers debate the Repair Act to ease car repairs.

New York: Every time you drive your car, it collects data about you. This includes how fast you go and how hard you brake. But you cannot see this data. Instead, automakers keep it secret, making it hard for car owners to do repairs. They want you to pay to have repairs done at dealerships.

To change this, the Repair Act is being discussed in Congress. This law would require automakers to share useful data with car owners. Nathan Proctor, a repair rights advocate, says this could help make repairs faster and cheaper.

The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce talked about this act during a big meeting. They also discussed ways to make cars safer and protect parts from theft. Things got tense when the Repair Act came up. Representatives Neal Dunn and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez introduced the bill. It wants to let car owners and repair shops access data collected by their cars, with support from vehicle suppliers and auto care groups.

Bill Hanvey, CEO of the Auto Care Association, said that protecting car owners’ data is important. He thinks it’s wrong for automakers to control data about cars they don’t own. “It may be your car, but it is the manufacturer’s data,” he said.

Car manufacturers and dealerships do not support the Repair Act. They worry about their secret business information being shared. Hilary Cain, a spokesperson for the automakers, claims they already provide repair instructions and tools to fix cars safely. She believes car owners should have the freedom to get repairs done anywhere. Automakers also say they agree with a federal repair law if it protects their information.

This fight shows the struggle between car owners wanting to fix their cars and companies wanting to keep their data safe.
