Young Entrepreneurs Raise $11.75M to Strengthen Africa’s Defense Industry
A group of Gen Z innovators just secured $11.75 million to empower Africa’s defense systems and address security challenges across the continent.
Abuja: After five years of building an edtech company, Nathan Nwachuku, 22, saw that Africa is changing fast. He believes the continent is ready for an “industrial revolution” because of its money, opportunities, and young people wanting to succeed.
However, Nwachuku also noticed a big problem. Africa faces many issues with terrorism and security. He shared that more people die from terror attacks in Africa than anywhere else. This danger could stop Africa from growing as it should.
So, Nwachuku teamed up with Maxwell Maduka, 24, to create Terra Industries. This company designs tools to help keep people safe from threats. Recently, they announced they raised $11.75 million to help their business grow, led by investor Joe Lonsdale and others.
Before this, they had also raised $800,000 when people became interested after they were featured on CNN. Some African investors also joined, including Tofino Capital and DFS Lab. Their goal is to make Africa strong by creating its own defense systems and protecting resources from attacks.
The team at Terra is skilled, with 40% of its engineers having military experience. Many have worked with Nigeria’s military or navy. Their products include drones for the air, towers for ground surveillance, and small robots. They even plan to build tools to help protect underwater pipelines.
Terra uses special software called ArtemisOS. This software helps find threats and alerts security teams quickly. Nwachuku wants to ensure Africa can take care of its own defense needs without relying too much on foreign countries.
They recently won a federal contract but could not share more details. The company’s income comes from selling protective systems to government and businesses. They’ve already made over $2.5 million and are currently helping protect resources worth about $11 billion.
Terra plans to use the new funds to build more factories in Africa and improve its software. They will also open new offices in San Francisco and London. Nwachuku believes that the only way for Africa to grow is by keeping its resources safe and secure.
