What You Should Know About the Super Flu Spreading in Europe and the US
The super flu is impacting health in Europe and the US as a new variant spreads, causing early outbreaks and concerns.
Washington: The flu is spreading more this fall, especially in the United States and the UK. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the 2024-25 flu season is the worst since 2017-18. In the UK, the flu started earlier than it has in many years.
Some news reports are calling it the “super flu.” But this is not a real medical term. The true name is “subclade K,” which is a new version of influenza A H3N2. This new variant has changes in a virus part called hemagglutinin. It makes it different from the viruses used in current vaccines, which means it can bypass some immunity from past infections or vaccines, making people more likely to get sick.
Data shows that since August 2025, 87 percent of H3N2 viruses found in the UK are this new subclade K. The name “super flu” makes it sound worse than it is. The H3N2 already caused serious illness in older people and kids, and this new version is not more dangerous than the older strain.
In 2025, the flu season in the US hit its highest point in early February. Many areas had over 50 percent of people with flu symptoms for 11 weeks. This trend led to a lot of hospital visits and 287 child deaths. These numbers show how big the outbreak is but do not mean the flu is more deadly than before.
This year, the flu is arriving sooner than usual all over the world. In Japan, it usually peaks from December to February, but in 2025, it started in late September. A report said that of the 23 H3 strains studied in Japan from September to early November, 22 were subclade K.
The early outbreak might be due to lower immunity in the public because of COVID-19 countermeasures and less physical health from extreme heat. During the COVID-19 years, the flu was mostly kept low. Many people could have lost some immunity. Australia saw its flu levels the highest they have been in almost 20 years, hinting that the Northern Hemisphere might face the same problems.
Questions have also come up about how well vaccines work against this new strain. The flu vaccine for the 2025-26 season is based on another type (the J.2 lineage) that is different from subclade K. However, early results from the UK show that 70-75 percent of vaccinated kids and 30-40 percent of adults did not need to go to the emergency room or get hospitalized after getting sick. This means the vaccine is still good at stopping severe illness, even if it’s not a perfect match.
To prevent getting sick, the same rules for regular flu apply. Doctors recommend getting vaccinated between October and November before the flu season starts, with the shot taking about two weeks to work. People aged 65 and older, those with health issues, pregnant women, young children, and health workers are especially advised to get vaccinated. In daily life, washing and cleaning hands well, wearing masks in big crowds, good room ventilation, and keeping humidity levels right are all helpful in stopping the virus from spreading.
