Massachusetts: Get ready for cicadas! In 2025, these fascinating insects will be back, and they’re bringing a lot of buzz with them.

These are the 17-year periodical cicadas, known as Brood XIV. They’ll pop up in various parts of the U.S., including our very own Massachusetts.

According to The Nature Conservancy, cicadas emerge when the soil warms up to about 64°F. So, expect them around May and they’ll stick around until late June.

The last time we saw this brood was back in 2008, so it’s been a while. Historical records show they’ve been around since the 1700s in places like Barnstable and Plymouth.

Now, you might be wondering what cicadas are all about. There are over 2,000 species worldwide, but in Massachusetts, the “Dog Day” cicada is the most common. They show up every couple of years.

But the periodical cicadas are the stars of the show. They’re a bit smaller and have black bodies. What’s really wild is how loud they can get—up to 100 decibels! They make their noise using special organs in their bodies.

Last summer, in 2024, two broods of cicadas emerged at the same time, which is pretty rare. But most of that action happened down south, so we missed out here.

Don’t worry about cicadas being harmful. They’re pretty harmless and don’t carry diseases, so your pets are safe too.

So, mark your calendars for 2025! It’s going to be a cicada celebration in Massachusetts.
