Waimanalo: The Hokule‘a, a traditional voyaging canoe, is back home at Sand Island just in time for the holidays. It’s been quite the journey!

After spending four months sailing around the Hawaiian islands, the canoe engaged with over 20 communities. They even had a special sail along Koolaupoko, stopping at places like Kaneohe and Kailua.

Now, the Hokule‘a is getting some TLC at the Marine Education Training Center. It’ll be out of the water for about four weeks for cleaning and repairs before it sets sail again in mid-January.

This statewide sail is a fantastic chance for locals to hop on board and learn about traditional navigation. The Polynesian Voyaging Society is all about caring for our Island Earth, which is pretty cool.

On December 6, the canoe made a memorable stop at Waimea Bay for The Eddie Big Wave Invitational. It was a special moment when the Kahiau Award was presented to the Hokule‘a captain.

Looking ahead, the Polynesian Voyaging Society is gearing up to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Hokule‘a on March 8. That’s a big milestone for cultural revival and environmental advocacy!

So, if you’re in the area, don’t miss out on the excitement. Stay updated with the latest happenings!
