Kentucky lawmakers are considering new bills that would permit adults to cultivate marijuana for personal use, potentially changing state laws.
Louisville: Right now, only medical marijuana is legal in Kentucky, but that might change soon. If voters get the chance, they could decide on some new laws.
This year, the Kentucky General Assembly is looking at a couple of bills that would let folks grow marijuana for their own use. Sounds interesting, right?
One of the bills, Senate Bill 36, aims to change the state constitution. If it passes, people 21 and older could legally possess, use, and even grow up to five cannabis plants at home. Senator David Yates from Louisville is behind this bill.
There’s also House Bill 105, which has similar goals and language. It’s sponsored by Representative Nima Kulkarni, also from Louisville. Both bills would put the question on the ballot for voters.
Just a heads up, medical marijuana is set to become legal in Kentucky starting January 1, 2025, thanks to a bipartisan effort in the legislature. They’ve even started giving out licenses for growers and dispensaries.
So, will Kentucky finally embrace recreational marijuana? These bills are just a couple of the many being discussed this year. There’s also Senate Bill 33, which aims to decriminalize possession altogether.
It’s an exciting time for marijuana laws in Kentucky, and we’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds!
