Salem and Silverton are hosting events to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day with community gatherings and activities
Salem: The third Monday of January is a special day. It’s when we celebrate the life of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. This federal holiday means many places, like state offices and schools, will be closed. It’s a great time for folks to volunteer and give back.
In Salem, the local NAACP branch is putting together a Peace Walk on Monday. Just a short drive away in Silverton, they’re bringing back their annual MLK Day event after last year’s ice storm canceled it.
So, if you’re in Salem, head over to Seed of Faith Ministries at 1 p.m. for the Peace Walk. It’ll run until 2:30 p.m. You’ll get to learn about the Civil Rights Movement and enjoy some warm cider while chatting with others.
In Silverton, their event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Silverton Grange. Expect a potluck with some delicious southern dishes and a keynote speech from Trivina Kassis, who works with Salem for Refugees. It’s a free event, but they’ll gladly accept donations.
And if you’re looking to enjoy the outdoors, the USDA Forest Service is waiving fees at many day-use sites in Oregon and Washington on MLK Day. It’s a perfect chance to connect with nature and reflect on Dr. King’s legacy.
