St. Joseph: Starting January 1, Missouri drivers need to put down their phones while driving. The new hands-free law is finally kicking in after a grace period.

This law, which has been in effect since August 2023, is all about keeping everyone safe on the roads. Sheriff Bill Puett emphasized that the goal is to cut down on distracted driving.

So, what does this mean for drivers? You can still use hands-free devices for things like GPS, phone calls, and music. But if you’re caught holding your phone, you could face some hefty fines.

For a first-time offense, you might pay up to $150. If you get caught again, that could jump to $250, and three or more violations could cost you up to $500. Serious accidents could lead to even bigger penalties, including jail time.

Law enforcement has been preparing for this change, giving out over 1,500 warnings to help drivers get ready. Starting January 1, officers will be on the lookout for violations, especially in St. Joseph.

Puett reminded everyone that distracted driving has taken a toll on many families. As we gather with loved ones during the holidays, it’s a good time to remember the importance of safe driving.

Just a heads up, this law is a secondary violation. That means officers can’t pull you over just for using your phone, but if they see you doing it while stopping you for something else, you could get a ticket.
