Jackson: Mississippi woke up to some seriously cold weather on Martin Luther King Day. The National Weather Service in Jackson warned of impactful snowfall across much of the state.

At 5:30 a.m., it was a chilly 22 degrees in Jackson, and Cleveland was even colder at 20 degrees. With the wind chill, it felt like 14 degrees. A cold weather advisory was in effect.

Down in Hattiesburg, it was slightly warmer at 24 degrees, but with a wind chill of 18 degrees. Hattiesburg, along with McComb and the Mississippi Coast, is under a Winter Storm Warning from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday.

Gulfport-Biloxi reported 27 degrees, feeling like 18 with the wind chill. The NWS said we should expect significant snowfall along the Highway 84 corridor on Tuesday, which could make travel pretty dangerous.

Governor Tate Reeves declared a State of Emergency for Mississippi ahead of the storms expected on Tuesday. The NWS mentioned that any snow accumulation could be impactful due to the cold temperatures, so it’s best to keep an eye on updates and think twice about traveling in the southern areas.

As for Jackson, they’re expecting up to two inches of snow on Tuesday, which could lead to hazardous driving conditions. The high for Tuesday is projected at 34 degrees, with a low of 13, meaning the snow might stick around for a bit.

In Hattiesburg, they’re looking at a significant threat of snow, with 2-4 inches likely on Tuesday. The NWS warned of dangerous travel conditions and possible power outages.
