Niagara Falls: Recently, the Niagara Falls Water Board has been making some big changes. A new majority is shaking things up, and several department heads have been let go.

In just a few months, at least three key leaders have been dismissed, and it looks like some positions might not be filled right away. Right after taking control in September, the new board fired David San Lorenzo, the Director of Administrative Services.

The news came through a brief email from Executive Director Sean Costello, which simply stated that San Lorenzo was no longer with the board. Staff were told to reach out to Costello or Safety Director John Accardo for HR questions, but guess what? Accardo is out too, having been let go at the end of December.

Water Board Chair Richard Sirianni confirmed that David Conti, the operations executive, has also been relieved of his duties. Sirianni believes these changes will make the board more efficient and get the most out of everyone involved.

They’re currently interviewing candidates to replace San Lorenzo, but it’s unclear how long that will take. Sirianni mentioned they’re looking to fill the position but don’t have a final choice yet. As for Accardo, he will be replaced eventually, but not just yet.

Conti’s role will be taken over by former executive director Paul Drof, who will work part-time and has the necessary licenses to operate the water and waste treatment plants. New York state only requires the licensed operator to be on-site for a minimum of 20 hours a week.

Interestingly, San Lorenzo had faced some backlash from the unionized workforce during tough contract negotiations over the past year. After his termination, those negotiations wrapped up quickly. It seems like the board is trying to turn a new leaf and improve things moving forward.
