A coalition of 18 AGs, including NC’s Jeff Jackson, sues to block Trump’s citizenship order affecting birthright citizenship
This lawsuit was filed right after Trump signed the order, which says that only kids born in the U.S. to at least one U.S. citizen or permanent resident can get citizenship. Jackson argues that this move goes against the Fourteenth Amendment, which has guaranteed citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil for over a century.
He emphasized that the Constitution is clear on this issue and that Trump’s order creates confusion and denies rights to many children. The lawsuit claims that if this order goes through, it would strip citizenship from about 12,000 babies born each month in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.
Jackson is determined to defend the Constitution and protect the rights that have been part of American values for generations. The order is set to take effect in a month, giving courts time to review it and possibly block it before it starts. This isn’t the first challenge to Trump’s order; the ACLU and other groups have already filed a similar lawsuit in New Hampshire.
