Neil Zurcher, the iconic travel reporter from WJW-TV, has passed away at 89, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and storytelling.
He passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89, and it’s a big loss for everyone who loved his “One Tank Trips” segments. Zurcher had a way of turning the ordinary into something special. He was born in a small farming community and joked about being the ninth in a class of eight.
After serving in the Marines, he kicked off his media career in 1955. He started as a reporter and photographer before joining WJW in 1967. He covered major events like Vietnam War protests and even interviewed Martin Luther King Jr.
His “One Tank Trips” series began in 1980 during the oil crisis, encouraging folks to explore local destinations. He found hidden gems all over Ohio, from quirky museums to beautiful parks. His motto was all about making vacations accessible and fun.
Zurcher drove around in some classic cars, including his famous 1959 Nash Metropolitan. He was also an Emmy winner and a proud member of several broadcasting halls of fame. He wrote several books, sharing his adventures and tips for travel.
Even after retiring, he kept the spirit of adventure alive, returning to WJW in 2012. His last local appearance was in 2022, and he always encouraged people to explore the world around them. As he once said, “Happy trails, and I hope I see you somewhere down the road.”
