The U.S. also released an Afghan man, Khan Mohammad, who was serving a life sentence for drug smuggling and terrorism. This whole exchange took a lot of back-and-forth between the U.S. and Afghan officials.
Khan Mohammad was actually the first person convicted in the U.S. on narco-terrorism charges. He was arrested back in 2006 and extradited to the States a year later.
The Taliban confirmed the swap, but they didn’t share the names of the other American released. However, it looks like another guy named William McKenty was also part of the deal.
Corbett’s family runs a site where they shared their joy about his release. They thanked both the Trump and Biden administrations for their help but also mentioned their concern for others still missing, like George Glezmann and Mahmood Habibi.
It’s a bittersweet moment, really. While they’re celebrating Ryan’s return, they’re also thinking of those who are still waiting for their loved ones to come home.
