Palm Beach: So, the Planning and Zoning Commission just dropped a bombshell. They’re suggesting a total ban on new private clubs in town. Can you believe it?

During a recent meeting, they were supposed to discuss whether to treat for-profit and non-profit clubs differently. But instead, they all seemed to agree that enough is enough.

One commissioner, William Gilbane, thought it might be better to limit for-profit clubs instead of banning them outright. He pointed out that private clubs have always been a part of the town’s vibe. But others, like Commissioner Michael Vincent John Spaziani, argued that the town is already at its limit.

Chair Gail Coniglio chimed in, mentioning plans for new clubs in spaces like the old Saks Fifth Avenue. She raised a good point about the high membership fees, which can range from $250,000 to $500,000.

Gilbane didn’t disagree but wondered how they could tell if they’ve hit their limit. He suggested restricting clubs in residential areas, but that wouldn’t help with the new proposals in commercial zones.

The whole discussion was sparked by worries about traffic and the pressure these clubs put on the community. Town planner Jennifer Hofmeister-Drew backed the idea of a ban, saying it would give them time to assess the current situation.

In the end, the commission voted 5-2 in favor of recommending this ban to the Town Council. It looks like Palm Beach is taking a stand on this one!
