Augusta: This past weekend, a group of Black travelers hit the slopes in Maine, enjoying a unique winter getaway. They came from places like Texas and New York, eager to experience what Maine has to offer.

Kameron Stanton, who was ice fishing before the ski trip, was excited about the adventure. He admitted he wouldn’t have thought to visit Maine without a little nudge. It’s funny how perceptions can change, right?

Lisa Jones, the founder of Black Travel Maine, organized this trip to show that Maine is more than just a winter wonderland; it’s a place rich in Black history too. She realized many people didn’t know about the state’s offerings, so she set out to change that.

During the weekend, visitors enjoyed skiing, shopping at L.L.Bean, and learning about Portland’s Black history. It was a chance to connect with the community and experience Maine through a different lens.

Jennifer Tinch and her husband were thrilled to try skiing for the first time. They wanted to soak in the experience and learn something new. It’s all about stepping out of your comfort zone, right?

As the group gathered at a local brewery, they shared stories and laughter, pleasantly surprised by how welcoming Maine felt. It’s nice to see people breaking down barriers and enjoying new experiences together.

Brian Purnell, a local expert, pointed out that Maine’s reputation for being predominantly white might deter some Black travelers. But he believes that once people give it a chance, they’ll find a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Despite its small Black population, Maine has a rich history that many don’t know about. From the Underground Railroad to the first known Black resident in 1608, there’s so much to discover.

Jones hopes to make this ski trip an annual event, showing that there’s plenty of room for growth in Maine’s tourism scene. It’s all about creating connections and making memories.

Portland Councilor Regina Phillips emphasized the importance of diversifying Maine’s image. Events like this highlight the thriving Black community and show that they are here to stay.

As the weekend wrapped up, many attendees, like Gloria Lee, were already planning their next visit. It’s amazing how a little exposure can change perceptions and open up new opportunities.
