Columbus: The trial for Jason Meade, a former deputy, has hit another snag. It was supposed to start in February, but now it’s pushed to May 21.
This delay comes after Meade’s lawyers asked for more time. They want to wait for the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on a related case that could affect how police use of force is judged.
Meade is facing serious charges, including murder, for the shooting of 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr. back in December 2020. The incident happened when Goodson was entering his grandmother’s house.
During his first trial, Meade claimed he saw Goodson waving a gun while driving. He followed him and said he ordered Goodson to show his hands. According to Meade, Goodson raised a handgun, prompting him to fire his rifle, hitting Goodson multiple times.
Goodson was just carrying sandwiches when he was shot, and he fell inside his grandmother’s home. The first jury couldn’t come to a decision, so now they’re trying again.
Since then, some charges have been dropped, and Meade’s team is pushing to move the trial out of Franklin County, saying the media coverage has made it hard to find an impartial jury.
