Morgantown: So, the U.S. House Ethics Committee just wrapped up its investigation into Rep. Alex Mooney. They found no wrongdoing regarding his campaign funds. This was a big deal, and the committee announced it on Monday.

They did mention that Mooney’s campaign didn’t fully follow some rules about using campaign funds. But they also said there was no proof he used those funds for personal gain. Mooney was pretty relieved and expressed gratitude for the committee’s decision. He felt the whole thing was politically motivated from the start.

He pointed fingers at the Office of Congressional Ethics, saying it was created by Nancy Pelosi back in 2019. Mooney has been dealing with these accusations since 2021, so he’s glad to have his name cleared.

The committee looked into claims that some members, including Mooney, might have misused campaign funds. They decided to close the case, which also involved a few other representatives.

Back in 2021, there were allegations that Mooney accepted a free trip to Aruba and used campaign resources for personal errands. The committee clarified that while members can use campaign funds for legitimate purposes, they can’t use them for personal expenses.

They also noted that the rules around campaign funds can be a bit murky, which is why they’re planning to release updated guidance. Mooney’s term in the House ends on January 3, 2025, and he’ll be succeeded by Republican Riley Moore.
