Washington: So, the U.S. just sent 11 Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Oman. The Pentagon shared this news on Monday, and it’s a pretty big deal.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had already told Congress back in September that he wanted to help these guys go home after a thorough review. It’s nice to see some movement on this front.
They mentioned how grateful they are to Oman for stepping up and helping out. It’s all part of the U.S. plan to reduce the number of detainees and eventually close down Guantanamo Bay.
For a bit of background, Guantanamo Bay is a military prison in Cuba that was set up after the 9/11 attacks to hold suspected terrorists. At one point, there were nearly 800 people locked up there.
It’s been criticized a lot for not giving inmates fair trials and for human rights issues. Even with all the pressure to shut it down, there are still 15 detainees left hanging out there.
