Indianapolis: Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a time to remember his legacy. If you need to mail something, visit your bank, or renew your driver’s license, you’ll have to hold off.
Most federal and state offices, banks, and postal services will be closed. So, here’s the scoop on what’s open and what’s not this MLK Day.
MLK Day falls on January 20 this year, honoring the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. It’s always observed on the third Monday of January.
Interestingly, this year, MLK Day coincides with Inauguration Day, when Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president. This has only happened a few times before, usually during second-term inaugurations.
As for the holiday itself, yes, it’s a federal holiday. All federal offices, including courts and social security offices, will be closed.
And if you’re wondering about the post office, all U.S. Post Offices will be closed, and no mail will be delivered. The only service running will be USPS priority mail.
FedEx will have limited operations, while UPS will be closed for domestic services. Some UPS stores might be open, but it’s best to check ahead.
As for banks, they’ll be closed too, following the federal holiday schedule. But you can still use ATMs and online banking.
In Indiana, MLK Day is a state holiday, so state offices and courts will be closed, and state employees get the day off.
All branches of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will also be closed, reopening on Tuesday. If you’re in Marion County, trash pickup will be delayed, so don’t forget to check your schedule.
The stock market will be closed as well, with both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq taking the day off.
Most schools and colleges will likely be closed, including Indianapolis Public Schools. It’s a good idea to check your local district’s website for updates.
As for libraries, all branches of the Indy Public Library will be closed, but you can still access a ton of digital content online.
On the bright side, most Walmart locations will be open, as they typically only close for Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Many local businesses and national chains will remain open, so it’s worth checking your local store before heading out.
