The weekend kicks off with a Welcome Reception and Film Screening at the Museum of the Big Bend on Friday night. You’ll get to meet conservation partners and enjoy some cool short films. One film follows researchers studying the comeback of Black Bears in West Texas, while another showcases efforts to save endangered bats. There’s even a film about relocating desert bighorn sheep!
Saturday is packed with activities for all ages. You can join a guided hike on Hancock Hill with Dr. Ryan S. Luna, where you’ll soak in the stunning desert views and learn about local wildlife. There’s also a Bird Walk at Kokernot Park led by Dr. Maureen Frank, perfect for bird lovers. Families can enjoy interactive exhibits at the Alpine Farmers Market, and there’s a fun Wildlife Scavenger Hunt around the city with prizes!
In the afternoon, there’s a Lunch and Learn at the Granada Theatre. While munching on delicious food from Alcove Social, you can listen to SRSU Graduate Research Assistants share their wildlife research. Topics include everything from high-elevation owls to the effects of grazing practices.
Don’t miss the Live Drawing Event at Front Street Books, where artist Chris Ruggia will create quick cartoon animal drawings. The highlight of the weekend is the Keynote Presentations and Panel Discussion at the Granada Theatre on Saturday night.
